Annette Johnston FPSNZ

Annette Johnston FPSNZ: A self-educated photographer, with 10 years behind the lens, I am deeply curious about all things photographic. I enjoy exploring a myriad of genre including travel, landscapes, wildlife, sports, portraits, street photography, composites and impressionism. It is however, my love of gardening that has led me to a passion for all things botanical. With a recognizable fine art style, I delight in a balance of blur and sharpness. I love flowers at all their stages, from new-born’s to those in their prime – but I have an affection for blooms past their best, most of all.

In 2019, I became an Associate of the Photographic Society of New Zealand with a portfolio of floral images ‘The Architecture of Summer Flowers’. In 2021, I became a Fellow of the Photographic Society of New Zealand (FPSNZ) with a conceptual portfolio titled  ‘Weaving Memories’.

I have enjoyed success in international and national competitions including being awarded the Royal Photographic Society Bronze Medal for portfolios in the 13th International Garden Photographer of the Year, I am a three-time Gold-Medallist at successive PSNZ National Exhibition’s (2016-2018) and awarded Champion Triptych at the 2018 Nelson Triptych Salon. The impressionist image of my granddaughter Mia, was featured on the cover of the 2015 New Zealand Camera.

Reaching the status of Fellow of the Photographic Society of New Zealand, whilst an enormous honour, has served as a challenge to me to broaden my photographic base, to try new things, new styles, new approaches, including writing poetry.  My poems are inspired by my images and in some cases, inspire the creation of an image to match the poem; ‘writing with light’ has come to mean even more.

I am a member of Tauranga Photographic Society, where I have just  completed a five-year term as President. I am a PSNZ Accredited Photographic Judge, and on the PSNZ Judge Accreditation Panel. I was part of the selection panel for NZ Camera (2020, 2021, 2022), and a judge at the PSNZ Sony National Exhibition in the same years. I have teamed up with Kevin Clarke from CMG Studios and together we host national and international photo tours and workshops. My two specialty areas are Flower Photography workshops and workshops on the understanding of the post processing and photo management in Adobe Lightroom.
