Tony Whitehead has been a keen photographer since childhood, learning film-based skills from his photographer father. Based in the Bay of Plenty, he has experience in a variety of photographic genres but is obsessed with nature photography and specifically birds in flight. A four-time New Zealand Geographic Photographer of the Year finalist, his work has also been recognised in Bird Photographer of the Year 2023. He is widely published in books and magazines nationally and internationally and his photos support a number of conservation and educational projects. He enjoys photo editing to optimise an image finding it analogous to developing and printing from film and is a firm believer in prints being the ultimate display for a photograph.
Tony publishes a weekly educational blog at www.tonywhitehead.com sharing his recent work and photographic resources on everything from stage and portrait photography to travel, wildlife fieldcraft, technical reviews and digital darkroom techniques.
Tony works with his daughter, Edin, as a wildlife photography tutor/guide for New Zealand Photography Workshops.
