Rotorua is built within the crater of a dormant volcano, a caldera that erupted over 280,000 years ago.
Te Arawa Māori first settled in Rotorua in the 14th century by the people who would become Ngāti Whakaue.
Rich in Māori history and mythology, Mokoia Island is home to the well-known love story of Hinemoa and Tūtānekai.
In the 19th century European settlers had an interest in developing Rotorua due to its unique geothermal activity. Today the city is a major destination for both domestic and international tourists.
No matter what direction you head when you leave the Novotel, you’ll find something of interest.
