Rotorua is built within the crater of a dormant volcano, a caldera that erupted over 280,000 years ago.

Te Arawa Māori first settled in Rotorua in the 14^th century by the people who would become Ngāti Whakaue.

Rich in Māori history and mythology, Mokoia Island is home to the well-known love story of Hinemoa and Tūtānekai.

In the 19^th century European settlers had an interest in developing Rotorua due to its unique geothermal activity. Today the city is a major destination for both domestic and international tourists.
