Following his early retirement, Paul travelled extensively. In 2003 he came to New Zealand to spend time with his daughter who was then studying at Auckland University. He enjoyed his visit so much that in 2004 he migrated to New Zealand and subsequently settled in Tauranga.

Pail describes his photographic journey as the hobby that kept him sane during two exceedingly demanding, yet vastly different careers. His photographic interests centre on portraiture, documentary, nature and street photography.

He was instrumental in encouraging the PSNZ council to create a specific definition for Street Photography.

Paul believes the elements, qualities and requirements of the new definition epitomize Street Photography as it applies in today’s society. Street Photography in New Zealand is now an official subcategory of Photojournalism. (See PSNZ Website for details).

Whilst Paul has developed a wide knowledge of photographic genres, he claims that he is constantly learning from other photographers and the artworks they create.

He became a PSNZ accredited judge in 2012. He regularly assesses club images and also judges at national and international salons. He is a past chairman of the Judge. Accreditation Panel and still assists with mentoring judges and assessing trainees. He joined the PSNZ Honours Board. In 2019 and in May 2025 was appointed Honours Board Chairman.
